Dr. Ernest Vendrell has been teaching at the college level since 1995, primarily in the areas of emergency and disaster management, public administration, and criminal justice. He earned a Ph.D. in Public Administration and Policy from the Union Institute, an M.S. in Management from St. Thomas University, and an M.S. and a B.S. in Criminal Justice from Florida International University.
Dr. Vendrell was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship in Police Studies with the United Kingdom for the 1999/2000 academic year, and was a Visiting Fellow at the University of Leicester, Scarman Centre for the Study of Public Order. His research was entitled “Preparing for the New Millennium: A Comparative Analysis of Emergency/Disaster Management Professional Development Strategies for the Police Service.” In addition, throughout the years, Dr. Vendrell has authored various articles and made contributions to books on the topics of law enforcement, security management, as well as emergency and disaster management. He serves as an Editor for the Society for Public Safety’s Public Safety Chronicles Journal and Magazine. In addition, he has served as a reviewer for the Security Journal.

Dr. Vendrell served 27 years in a sworn law enforcement capacity with the Miami-Dade Police Department. Throughout his law enforcement career, he worked in a variety of patrol, investigative, administrative, and supervisory assignments. In particular, he was assigned to his department’s main Command Post immediately after Hurricane Andrew, serving as a Command Post Supervisor responsible for various liaison activities with outside agencies. In addition, for a number of years, he was assigned to his department’s Training Bureau as a Training Supervisor responsible for the administration of various programs, including Critical Incident Management.
Dr. Vendrell is a member of various organizations, including the American Society for Industrial Security (ASIS International), where he serves on the Crisis Management and Business Continuity Council and is the Chair of the Editorial Committee; the International Association of Emergency Managers; and the International Association for Law Enforcement Planners. He is a Certified Protection Professional (CPP), a Certified Emergency Manager (CEM), as well as a Certified Law Enforcement Planner (CLEP).
