Dr. Galo E. Alava is an Assistant Professor of Health Care Management in the Donald R. Tapia School of Business.
Dr. Alava holds a Masters in Business Administration from University of Phoenix and a Doctorate in Medicine and Surgery from Universidad Central del Ecuador.
Prior to joining the Saint Leo faculty, Dr. Alava was a Research Fellow in Surgical Oncology at Saint Vincent's Hospital and Picower Institute in New York. He later worked at a national health care company as a regional manager for DME, respiratory therapy, and infusion therapy. Changing career paths, he then became the Chair of the Surgical Technology Program at FMU.
His professional and research interests include chronobiology, epidemiology, immunology, medical ethics, health care reform, global medicine, and social justice.
Dr. Alava is the author of numerous publications regarding chronobiology, tumor transplantation, malaria, and tumor necrosis factor. A book on medical ethics is in review for publication in Ecuador by the National Council of Sciences.
He's been featured in numerous industry and academic publications and as a featured speaker at international conferences in the United States and Latin America.
Dr. Alava has been instrumental in supporting the university's service-learning programs, leading students, faculty, and staff on service missions to Honduras, Ecuador, and Costa Rica.
