About
Dr. June Hammond came to Saint Leo fulltime in 2000, charged with re-starting the music program. She started the University Chorus, the University Concert Band, the University String Ensemble, the Gospel and Multicultural Choir, and the SLU Herald Trumpets. In 2005 she was awarded tenure and promoted to Associate Professor of Music, where she continues today.
Education
Dr. Hammond holds five degrees. She earned a Bachelor of Music degree in Instrumental Music Education, her State of South Carolina teaching certificate, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics, from Furman University. She then went on to earn a Master of Music degree in Bassoon Performance and a Master of Arts degree in Mathematics from the University of Georgia, and finally earned a Doctor of Music degree in Woodwind Performance from The Florida State University. While at FSU, she was a Graduate Fellow and was FSU's Fulbright nominee. She is a member of Phi Kappa Phi National Honor Society, Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society, Kappa Delta Pi National Education Honor Society, and Pi Mu Epsilon National Honorary Mathematics Fraternity.
Hobbies & Interests
June loves doing several things. One is conducting. She has been a professional conductor for the last ten years at the collegiate level, and has also been a church music minister. As a professional bassoonist, she has performed in concert with Luciano Pavarotti, Ray Charles, Yanni, the Moody Blues, and in many concerts at the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center and at venues all over the eastern seaboard. Many of her recitals have been aired on PBS radio stations. She was also selected as a bassoonist with the Blossom Festival of the Cleveland Orchestra (which only accepts 2 bassoonists, by nationwide audition, each summer), as well as the Sarasota Music Festival.

She is popular as a judge and a clinician in the Tampa Bay area, and volunteers many hours each year in the Hillsborough and Pasco County school system music programs.
