Professional Association Positively Reviews Saint Leo’s Curriculum
January 27, 2012
— Saint Leo University’s Bachelor of Arts degree program in human resource management has been reviewed by the influential Society for Human Resource Management and meets the SHRM guidelines for undergraduate programs, announced Dr. Michael Nastanski, dean of the Donald R. Tapia School of Business.
The Society for Human Resource Management developed guidelines to define the minimum content that should be studied by college students majoring in human resource management. The work is part of a broader academic initiative on the part of the Society to set standards that degree programs may follow. Students and prospective students, in turn, benefit from knowing the education they receive meets the expectations of leaders in the field.
“The Donald R. Tapia School of Business has always understood the value and quality of Saint Leo’s undergraduate degree in human resource management,” said Dr. J. Adam Shoemaker, an assistant professor at the Donald R. Tapia School of Business. Dr. Shoemaker coordinated the academic review efforts with the Society.
“SHRM’s confirmation that our curriculum aligns with academic and professional expectations for what an HR degree should include further cements Saint Leo as a competitor on an international stage. SHRM is the predominant professional association in the field of HR and its endorsement of what we offer to our students is a tribute to the quality of our faculty, our school and our university,” he continued. SHRM is based in Alexandria, VA, and represents more than 250,000 members in more than 140 countries.
The B.A. in human resource management is offered at University Campus in Saint Leo, FL, through the Center for Online Learning, and at many Saint Leo University regional education centers, which are located in seven states. The degree prepares students for careers in the fields of staffing, training and development, compensation, employee and labor relations, and for graduate education. Students may also opt for a minor in human resource management in combination with any academic major.
Dean Nastanski also welcomed the SHRM news as “increasing recognition of the high-quality learning experience” at Saint Leo.
Further, the Donald R. Tapia School of Business is accredited by the International Assembly for Collegiate Business Education, and Saint Leo University received a reaffirmation of its university-wide accreditation in December 2011 from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)* for the next 10 years.
