Dr. Smith is an Assistant Professor of Economics and Finance and has been a member of the Saint Leo Community since 2010. Dr. Smith started his professional career as an enlisted member of the United States Marine Corps, after one tour of duty he earned the rank of Sergeant, and at the end of that tour began his academic journey. He earned his Bachelors from Old Dominion University, Masters of Business Administration from Capella University, and his Ph.D. from Walden University after finishing his time in service and, after completing his terminal degree, went back to school to study economics at East Carolina University. After completing his formal education, Dr. Smith focused on further developing his skills by teaching, researching, mentoring, and applying what he learned in academia and in the field. During this time, he taught for Campbell University, South University, Averett University, Florida Institute of Technology, and other colleges and universities in the North Carolina and Virginia Regions. Dr. Smith’s professional career included managing portfolios and conducting research on portfolios, bonds, alternative investments, equities, derivative securities, and mutual funds for a team of advisors in the Hampton Roads Region at a top financial advisory firm for approximately six years. At the same time, he continued to develop his teaching skills, published nine peer-reviewed journal articles and mentored a Ph.D. candidate through their dissertation. Dr. Smith is interested broadly in research that is associated with the fields of finance and economics.
