Some host agencies have set internship programs or management trainee positions available. Others accept interns on an individual basis and arrange the internship program accordingly.
In the latter case, three formats are normally considered:
The choice of which of the three formats to utilize is reached by discussion between the student and the host agency supervisor.
Host agencies are contacted either directly by the students or by their instructor/faculty supervisor to discuss the possibility of an internship. Once the possibility exists, students are expected to apply on their own by contacting the appropriate office or individual at the host agency for presentation of their resume and academic record and discussion of their interests and the host agency's opportunities. The internship instructor is available to clarify policies and assist in structuring the internship.
The IHT program provides an Internship Agreement form for all parties to sign, an Internship Weekly Report that is completed by students and submitted to the faculty supervisor to document their progress, and an Internship Evaluation Report that is completed by the host agency supervisor as part of the assessment process at the end of the Internship.
Interns also submit a final report to their faculty supervisor that addresses the accomplishment of their internship goals, the overall quality of their internship, and its impact on their intended goals. Throughout the internship, the faculty supervisor also establishes and maintains contact with the host agency supervisor to ensure that expectations and performance standards are suitable and appropriate to the objectives of all concerned.
