In this course students will explore the development of American
popular music beginning with its roots in African American slave
music, continuing through minstrelsy, vaudeville, Tin Pan Alley,
American Musical Theatre, Blues, Jazz, Rock and Roll, Alternative,
and Hip Hop. Students will practice critical listening skills as
they are exposed to many genres of popular music, and will explore
the social, economic, and philosophical paradigms that gave rise to
each genre in the American experience of music.
