Alumni Population Now Nears 80,000

With the last of 18 Saint Leo University commencement ceremonies taking place at the end of June in Corpus Christi, Texas, the ranks of alumni have grown to nearly 80,000. Saint Leo alumni live in all 50 states, Washington, DC, five U.S. territories, and 72 countries.

Graduation season for the Saint Leo community kicked off during the afternoon of May 1 with the Baccalaureate Mass, celebrated by the Most Reverend Bishop Robert Lynch ’97, at the Marion Bowman Activities Center at University Campus.

Nearly 1,400 graduates were awarded their degrees over the course of three commencement ceremonies at University Campus. Graduates of the Center for Online Learning, the Adult Education Center, and undergraduates who wished to participate in the evening commencement ceremony, received their degrees May 1, while those earning advanced degrees celebrated in the morning of May 2 and undergraduates earned their degrees later that day at University Campus.

For her commitment to improve the quality of lives of farmworkers and their families in Pasco County and throughout Florida, an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree was awarded to Reverend Margarita Romo, on Saturday afternoon. Romo is the founder and executive director of Farmworkers Self-Help, Inc.

One of the largest commencement ceremonies was held May 16 for the Virginia region, with degrees being conferred to more than 715 students at the Hampton University Convocation Center.

The Atlanta region, consisting of the Marietta, Gwinnett, and Morrow education centers, presented diplomas to about 300 students May 30, while the Gainesville Education Center graduated about 120 on May 9 and the Tampa Education Center conferred about 120 degrees on May 30.

The San Diego Education Center held its first commencement ceremony this year on June 19 at TSC Auditorium at Naval Base San Diego.
