Lions Athletic Teams Headed to Conference Championships, Nationals

The calendar has turned to March and that can only mean one thing – tournament time!

Men’s and Women’s 2015 Sunshine State Conference Basketball Championships

The Saint Leo men’s and women’s basketball teams will compete in their respective post-season championships this week at the 2015 Sunshine State Conference tournament, March 5-8 at the Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee, Fl.

The women’s basketball team (9-17, 4-14, SSC), will face top-seed Nova Southeastern University (21-5, 13-3 SSC), in the quarterfinals at noon, Thursday, March 5. The winner advances to the semifinal round at noon, Saturday, March 7, against the winner of the Florida Southern College vs. University of Tampa quarterfinal game.

The Lions men’s basketball squad (14-14, 6-10 SSC), opens tournament play against No. 2 seed Barry University (22-4, 13-3 SSC), in a quarterfinal matchup at 5 p.m., Friday, March 6. The winner advances to the semifinal round at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, March 7, against the winner of the University of Tampa vs. Nova Southeastern quarterfinal game.

The championship contests will be played on Sunday, March 8, with the women’s title game at 1 p.m., followed by the men’s championship at 4 p.m.

Men’s and Women’s 2015 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships

Saint Leo University men’s and women’s swimming program will be represented by eight Lions at the 2015 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, March 11 through March 14 in Indianapolis, IN.

This year’s nationals swimming and diving meet will feature these student-athletes competing in the following events (year and hometown in parentheses):

Women

Natalia Garriock (freshman, Duncan, British Columbia) – 100 Meter Freestyle

Nicole Weber (sophomore, Konz, Germany) – 100 and 200 Meter Breaststroke

Saint Leo Baseball Team Cracks Top 10 in National Polls

In other Saint Leo University sports news, the Saint Leo baseball team jumped up in the recently released national polls, moving from No. 28 to No. 14 in the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper poll, and from No. 13 to No. 10 in the D2 Baseball News poll according to polling officials. Sunshine State Conference rival, University of Tampa, remains the unanimous No 1 team in the nation.

At the time of the poll calculation, the Lions were 17-1 on the season having defeated regional competitor Embry-Riddle University, conference foe Eckerd College, and Division 1 opponent University of Nebraska-Omaha.

Saint Leo is off to its best season start ever and leads the nation in homeruns (29), runs scored (183), and hits (223), Sophomore Troy Sieber is tied for first in the nation with 29 RBI.

The Lions will open SSC play with a three-game series starting Friday March 6 at 6 p.m. against No. 8/13 Nova Southeastern. The series will conclude at Thomas Southard Stadium with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 7, beginning at 1 p.m.
