New Softball Field Nears Completion
December 22, 2010
Fans of Lions softball will be watching the team play on a new home field in 2011. Work on the new complex neared completion in the final weeks of 2010.
Softball had to move to a new spot on campus because the location of the old field is needed for two new residence halls, explained Fran Reidy, director of athletics. Certain advantages are coming with the move, though. Fixed, elevated bleacher seats are being added, which should allow fans to look down onto the field and permit a better view of the play. A two-story press box is being added in the new location, whereas none was available at the old field. The press box will have a locker room on the first floor, furnished with laundry facilities on site for the convenience of the team. In addition, a covered batting facility has been constructed that will allow the softball and baseball teams to practice in any weather. Rounding out the improvements are new restrooms, a new parking lot, and accessibility to all aspects of the new venue for those with disabilities. The season opens in late February.
