Saint Leo Wins SSC Mayors’ Cup Men’s Division Trophy

May 23, 2014

Saint Leo University has won the men’s division Sunshine State Conference (SSC) Mayors’ Cup all-sports trophy for 2013-2014. The Lions earned the trophy outright for the first time, after sharing it with Florida Southern for 2012-2013.

First presented following the 1986-1987 academic year, the award recognizes the annual SSC all-sports champion. It was traditionally sponsored by the mayors of the nine communities in which SSC member institutions are located.

In the men’s division, points are awarded based on final regular-season conference standings in baseball, basketball, lacrosse, soccer, and ten¬nis. For cross country, golf, and swimming, points are awarded based on each team’s finish at the respective conference championship event.

Saint Leo led the league with a total of 46 points, and Florida Southern finished second with a total of 43.5 points.

“Congratulations to President Arthur Kirk, Athletic Director Fran Reidy, and the entire Saint Leo Athletic Department and student-athlete community on an outstanding academic year,” said SSC Commissioner Ed Pasque.

The Lions had a remarkable year. They won the men’s soccer regular-season title, and finished runner-up in basketball, cross country, and golf. They finished third in baseball and lacrosse. The Saint Leo men’s cross country and soccer teams both advanced to their respective NCAA South Region Championships. The cross country team continued on to the NCAA Championship for the first time in program history, finishing 28th. The men’s basketball team earned a spot in the NCAA South Regional and advanced to the second round, the only SSC team to do so. Saint Leo’s men’s swimming team competed at the NCAA Championships, finishing 17th.

On the women’s side, the University of Tampa won the Mayors’ Cup with 53.5 points. Saint Leo finished fourth with 43.5 points.

“I could not be prouder of our coaches, staff, and student-athletes for capturing the Mayors’ Cup again this year,” said Fran Reidy, director of Athletics. “To be the best all-around men’s program in arguably the best Division II conference in the country is a remarkable achievement. This was our goal from the opening of fall pre-season, and we will proudly display the Cup for the next year in the trophy case.”
