Storied Flag Now at University Field
March 31, 2012
A flag that made trips around the globe has found a
new home at University Field. The flag that formerly flew aboard
the USS Iwo Jima was raised at University Field prior to the men’s
lacrosse game against Lindenwood University Tuesday, March
29.
During a pregame ceremony, the previous flag was retired from
service and the new colors raised. This service was conducted by
the Saint Leo University ROTC cadets.
The flag––which announced the United States’ arrival at ports of
call around the world––measures 20 feet long and 10 feet wide. It
came to Saint Leo as a donation from former Saint Leo employee,
long-time Lions supporter, and military veteran Fred Colby, whose
son, Rick, is currently stationed aboard the Iwo Jima.
