Writers Retreat at University Campus Open to Community, and to Writers at All Levels

Saint Leo University is hosting a retreat—for the first time—next month for writers at all levels of development, and community members from the area are encouraged to attend.

The inaugural Sandhill Writers Retreat will be held from noon to 6:30 p.m., Saturday, May 4, at University Campus. The half-day retreat will feature classes in writing fiction, nonfiction, and poetry with respected writing faculty members from area colleges or universities. Additionally, the retreat program will include a faculty reading and book signing, a reception, and an optional open reading for participants. The cost of the program is $95 for the general public; $85 for teachers, students, and senior citizens; and free admission for veterans and active-duty military servicemembers. Saint Leo faculty, staff, and students are also admitted free.

Additionally, a Iimited number of one-on-one manuscript review conferences will be available with retreat faculty members for an additional fee of $75.

The retreat faculty members are as follows:

  • Erica Dawson will lead the poetry sessions. She is assistant professor of English at the University of Tampa. Her second collection of poetry, The Small Blades Hurt, will be published in 2014.
  • Philip F. Deaver will lead the fiction session. He is professor of English and writer in residence at Rollins College, Winter Park, FL. He won the Flannery O’Connor Award for Short Fiction for his story collection Silent Retreats, and is editor of a collection of baseball essays, Saving from Second: Writers on Baseball.
  • Ira Sukrungruang will lead the nonfiction sessions. He is assistant professor of English at the University of South Florida, Tampa. He is the author of Talk Thai: The Adventures of Buddhist Boy, and the editor of two anthologies.
