May 03, 2010
As news spread that online alumnus Don Tapia ’05,
’07 has made a $4 million gift to help the university construct at
21st century home for the School of Business, a variety
of news outlets contacted Saint Leo to do follow-up stories about
the university’s plans and the fascinating personal story of our
donor.
Reporter Alcides Segui of WTVT Fox 13 Television in Tampa
conducted interviews with Mr. Tapia and University President Arthur
F. Kirk, Jr. for the station’s Monday May 3 morning show, which
included several live shots from the main campus. Mr. Tapia
discussed going back to school in his 60s, and Dr. Kirk outlined
the importance of the donation to the building campaign, and the
significance of the building to students.
Tampa Tribune columnist Tom Jackson also visited with Mr. Tapia,
his young fraternity brothers on campus, and university
administrators during a groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday. The
result was a lively column appearing Sunday, May 2, in the
newspaper’s Pasco County section that captured Mr. Tapia’s
entrepreneurial energy and his affection for Saint Leo. Jackson
also wrote enthusiastically about the technological capabilities
being designed into the Donald R. Tapia Building.
The Washington Post, the St. Petersburg Times, and the Associated
Press also were among the many news organizations that covered the
story.
