December 04, 2014
The Professional Grounds Management Society (PGMS) recently recognized Saint Leo University with an Honor Award in the Society's 2014 Green Star Awards competition. The award was given in the University and College Grounds category for exceptional grounds maintenance. Winners were honored during the Society's 2014 Awards Dinner held October 24 in conjunction with the School of Grounds Management & GIE+EXPO in Louisville, KY.
The building that houses the Donald R. Tapia School of Business at University Campus was built in 2011 and is LEED Gold certified. The building’s landscaping is maintained with native plants and roof water irrigation. The beds were designed in-house with plants from an on-site nursery. Using multi-colored rock, a Saint Leo University best practice, an aesthetic border is created to help keep the mulch in place and off the pathways.
“We take great pride in the aesthetic appearance of our campus,” said Jose Caban, director of plant operations at Saint Leo University. “We were very gratified to receive this prestigious award, which recognizes the expertise of our building and grounds staff who help maintain a professional-looking internal and external environment at University Campus.”
Saint Leo University Campus encompasses 168 acres. The landscaping space covers all the roadways, State Road 52 roadside, and the various flower beds around campus. Saint Leo’s plant operations grounds maintenance staff uses 1,150 bags of mulch, 250 yards of rock, and 5,993 plants annually in maintaining the beautiful landscaping design.
The Green Star Awards program brings national recognition to grounds maintained with a high degree of excellence, complimenting other national landscape award programs that recognize outstanding landscape design and construction. Overall, PGMS presented six Grand Awards, its highest honor, as well as 17 Honor Awards and three Merit Awards in six categories of competition. To view a complete list of winners, please click here.
