Alcohol Safety

At Saint Leo, our students value being part of a community built on respect, trust, integrity and personal development. We're here to help educate our students on responsible decision-making.

We hope the information presented on this page will be useful when discussing college drinking with your student.

Saint Leo Alcohol Policies

For full guidelines about alcohol on campus, have your student read the Code of Conduct so they understand their rights and responsibilities as a member of the Saint Leo community.

Talk With Your Student Before School Starts

Research shows that parents have considerable influence on students' drinking behaviors—a study conducted by Boise State University (2001) indicates that first-year college students had "lower drinking tendencies (and fewer) drinking consequences" when their parents "were educated about binge drinking and how to convey information to their teens, and then encouraged to talk with their teens just before" their students started college.

Here are some conversation starters you may want to use while your student is still home:

  1. How will you decide whether or not to drink at college?
  2. What will you do if you find yourself at a party with only alcohol to drink?
  3. What will you do if your roommate wants to drink and party?
  4. What will you do if you find a student passed out from alcohol consumption?
  5. How will you handle it if you are asked to baby-sit someone who is very drunk?

Keep the Conversations Going

Perhaps the most important thing parents can do to help ensure their college students make healthy, informed decisions is to stay involved in their children’s lives.

Once your student is at college, you can ask questions such as:

  1. Do you like your classes?
  2. How is your social life going?
  3. How are you spending your down time?
  4. Are you enjoying dorm life?
  5. Do you see others making friends or just drinking buddies?
  6. How are you getting along with your roommate?
  7. Are you feeling overwhelmed?
  8. What can we do to help you?
