Students and Future Attorneys Invited to See a Law School that Helps Veterans
A "Mobile Law Office" operated by the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law visited the main campus for several hours on September 10, to build awareness of the need for legal outreach services for some of our nation’s veterans, and to demonstrate to campus students the possibilities of a legal career.
The Mobile Law Office, or Project Salute, is operated as a service project of UDM, another Catholic institution. Peter Wubbenhorst, associate professor of criminal justice and pre-law advisor to our main campus students, asked the UDM team to visit Saint Leo after encountering Project Salute at a conference.
The director of admissions of UDM School of Law, Kimberly Jones, visited the campus along with the RV to meet Saint Leo students interested in attending law school. The legally minded Saint Leo undergraduates also got to see the vehicle used as an effective public-service campaign using volunteer attorneys. Typically, when Project Salute travels to a community for a day or two, Wubbenhorst said, attorneys from the local area who are willing to work on a pro-bono basis come and assist area veterans in need. Many need help procuring benefits they are legally due, but for some reason have been unable to attain. Wubbenhorst did not have time to recruit local attorneys for this first visit, but he would like to have Project Salute return in 2010, staffed by volunteer attorneys. Those interested may contact him at peter.wubbenhorst@saintleo.edu.
