Alumni Board Call for Nominations

The Saint Leo University Alumni Association Board of Directors oversees the activities of the Saint Leo Alumni Association and serves as an advisory committee to Saint Leo University on matters of importance to alumni. If you or an alumnus/a you know would be a viable candidate for the Alumni Association Board of Directors please submit a nomination today. We are accepting nominations through January 20, 2012 for the 2013-15 board term. Terms are three years and the board meets in person three times during the course of each year (summer, fall, and spring).

Saint Leo University’s International Business Conference, “Strategic Alliances for a Global Economy,” will be held on February 8-10, 2012, at Saint Leo University’s main campus.

The 2012 International Business Conference is an opportunity for you to share innovative international business information and experience with local and international industry professionals. The conference will provide educational opportunities for all attendees, such as presentations and speakers, as well as time to network with colleagues interested in a variety of business fields.

Gainesville Center Hosts Ribbon Cutting at
Magnolia Parke

The Saint Leo University Gainesville Center celebrated its expansion with a ribbon cutting ceremony on November 30 at the recently opened Magnolia Parke location. Members of the local community, including government officials, were on hand for tours of the new location which provides an additional 8,300 square feet of classroom and office space, less than three miles east of Santa Fe College where Saint Leo continues to operate at its longtime location.

Saint Leo VP of Continuing Education and Student Services Ed Dadez, and Assistant Vice President for the Florida Region Steve Hess welcomed all to the new location and participated in the ribbon cutting. Assistant to the President for University Ministry Father Stephan Brown also walked through and blessed each of the classrooms and offices now occupied by Saint Leo students, faculty, and staff. Lions' mascot Fritz was also a part of the celebrations, standing in for the ribbon cutting alongside the community leaders and Saint Leo representatives.

Saint Leo University | SLU eNewsAlumni Cruise to Set Sail July 30, 2012

Make plans to set sail to the Bahamas on a four-night cruise onboard Royal Caribbean’s Monarch of the Seas with fellow Saint Leo alumni and friends on July 30, 2012.  The cruise will depart from Port Canaveral, FL, and will be a four-night sailing with stops in Cococay (Royal Caribbean’s private island) and Nassau, Bahamas.  There is also one day at sea before returning to Port Canaveral on the morning of August 3.

While on board, you’ll have an opportunity to enjoy specially arranged Saint Leo-specific activities as well as all of the cruise amenities offered by AAA and Royal Caribbean.  Bring the entire family to enjoy a relaxing getaway, and connect with Saint Leo classmates and friends.

Saint Leo University | SLU eNewsGainesville Student Wins $23,000 Scholarship for Business Studies

Antron McCullough, a 23-year-old business administration student, won $23,000 in scholarship money as part of the Dr. Pepper Tuition Giveaway during the Big 10 Championship Game on Saturday, December 3, between Michigan State University and the University of Wisconsin. The game and the tuition contest were held in Indianapolis.

McCullough emerged as one of two finalists Friday in the national competition. He then faced off against another college student in a one-on-one competition that was televised during the half-time segment of the game, broadcast on Fox Sports.

ROTC Commissioning
Saint Leo University | SLU eNews Saint Leo ROTC student Chung Yim was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army this month at ceremony at the University of South Florida. Yim has just finished a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and will be stationed at Fort Riley in Kansas where he will be doing military intelligence work.
 
Alumni Speak About Medical Technology Careers
Saint Leo University | SLU eNewsAlumni Bethany Peters '09 (medical technology) and Trevor Couch '09 (biology) returned to campus to talk to students about their internships with Bayfront Medical Center. The two came at the invitation of Dr. Iain Duffy and Dr. Howard Carey, who is also the pre-health professions advisor. Bethany, a medical technology major, spent three years in classes and her fourth year at Bayfront. Bethany now works for All Children's Hospital. Trevor did his internship after graduation and continues to work at Bayfront.

Women's Athletic Teams Honor Tampa Bay Veterans
Saint Leo University | SLU eNewsThe women's lacrosse and soccer teams showed their support for Tampa Bay veterans by helping to set up 20,677 flags in MacDill Park in downtown Tampa on December 2. Each flag honored a service member currently or formerly deployed from Tampa Bay to either Iraq or Afghanistan. The event was sponsored by Fifth Third Bank and the Camaraderie Foundation, which provides private counseling to service members and their families.

Sturgis Griffin III '10
Saint Leo University | SLU eNewsStudents who earn their bachelor's degrees in adulthood, once they have jobs and families, typically have lots of stories about balancing responsibilities and overcoming unforeseen problems. Sturgis Griffin III, a 2009 graduate and U.S. Air Force veteran who earned his Bachelor of Science degree in computer information systems at the MacDill location, was no exception. Griffin, like many adult students, initially had trepidation about enrolling in college. After high school, he had gone directly into the United States Air Force for 22 years, and had no specific college experience. Read More.
