Verification Process

Verification confirms through documentation review that the information provided on a student’s Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is accurate. Students are selected for verification by the Department of Education or Saint Leo if conflicting information is presented. The verification process prevents ineligible students from receiving aid by reporting false information and ensures that eligible students receive all of the aid for which they are qualified.

Forms Submission

To submit a form, students MUST use eForm. Students can access eForm by logging into eLion and clicking on "eForm" under the Online Services section. If a student is submitting an eForm that requires the signature of a parent or spouse, the student must print the eForm and have his or her parent or spouse sign the form. The form must be scanned and emailed or faxed to Saint Leo University. (See below for details on emailing and faxing information.)

Students who are selected for verification will not be eligible to receive financial aid until all documents have been received and reviewed. It is important that students respond to requests for documentation in a timely manner to avoid delays in applying financial aid as a credit to student bills. If a student has received a fund disbursement prior to being selected for verification, verification must be completed or the student will become ineligible for financial aid and will be obligated to return the disbursed funds. The student must then pay any resulting balance on their student account.

Students selected for verification are notified by email that additional documents are needed. This email will be sent to students’ Saint Leo email addresses only.

The Financial Aid Office will review the submitted documentation and make changes as necessary. The student should refrain from making additional changes unless instructed by the Financial Aid Office.

Once verification is complete, the student will receive an award notification, unless he or she has already received one and nothing has changed.

To view the required documents necessary for the verification process:

  • Access eLion via the portal,
  • On Student Menu, Communication,
  • Click "My Documents" – Students will be able to see the documents requested of them.

Students should continue to monitor eLion for the status of their submitted documents. A "Blank" or "Not Received" status indicates that the document was not received, the document was illegible, or the document was not identified with the student ID. Remember to include your student ID on all documentation.

Documentation not submitted via eForm, can be sent by fax or email.

Students must include their student ID number on every page of each document.

All financial aid applicants selected for verification must complete the process prior to the deadline published in the appropriate Federal Register. Students should review the appropriate policy (below) and anticipate submitting all verification documents two weeks prior to the deadline published in the policy in order to ensure their verification can be completed and financial aid processed prior to that deadline.
