What are they?

Malware, short for malicious software, is designed to damage or perform illegitimate actions on a computer system. While it cannot damage physical hardware, it can corrupt data and software with damage ranging from minor irritation to stealing sensitive information to disabling systems and networks. The two most common types are viruses and worms.

Spyware is software designed to collect information from your computer without your knowledge. These can capture information like usernames and passwords, credit card information, web history, and more.

Avoiding Malware & Spyware

  • Download a reputable computer security tool (refer to Security Related Tools). Update and scan your computer regularly; you can configure it to scan every time you start up your computer.
  • Scan every new program or file you have downloaded (including packaged software you have bought from the store).
  • When using your email, take care opening links (refer to Info About Phishing).
  • Make sure your browser and security patches are up to date.
  • Back up your data.
