Center Spotlight: Saint Leo’s Marietta, GA Education Center

Saint Leo University operates a number of Education Centers around the country. An Education Center is a satellite location designed to offer a variety of academic programs at the local level. Students enjoy small class sizes with one-on-one access to instructors and academic support to help them achieve their educational goals.

We recently caught up with Natanya Dowell, the associate director of our Marietta, GA center in the Atlanta area, to learn more about what it offers and why it’s a great option for those seeking various degrees from a nationally-recognized institution.

Q: When are classes offered at your center?

A: We offer classes Monday through Saturday, and we have day and evening options on most days. Our evening classes generally start at 5 p.m., and the late classes go until 10 p.m.

We also offer video-connected courses that students can take right from home through video conferencing. Students can engage with their professors online by submitting questions through a chat feature and getting them answered during the lectures. For students who aren’t able to make it during scheduled class time, they can take online courses from anywhere with an internet connection.

Q: How many students attend the center, and what are the faculty like who teach there?

A: For the 2017 Fall 2 semester, we have 173 total students. We have 103 who are using military benefits. We recently signed an agreement with the Georgia National Guard that allows active-duty and reservist members to receive special tuition fees.

We have both full-time and adjunct faculty members. Our faculty have real-world experience working in the fields in which they teach. They really care about our students, so they take the time to bring their professional experience into a classroom setting.

The cybersecurity lab at Saint Leo University's Marietta, GA Education CenterQ: What makes your center unique?

A: We have a very vibrant center with faculty who are focused and engaged with our students. The faculty are always offering tutoring and one-on-one support whenever students need this. The students’ needs are being met, and that’s what helps make them successful.

We want everyone to know that we’re open to all students, from recent high school graduates to adult learners going back to school. We have very flexible program options for all lifestyles.

We have a cybersecurity lab with 21 laptops and an entire console. This lab provides live simulations so students can interface with the system as if they were dealing with a real cybersecurity issue. We just opened this lab back in July.

We host seminars throughout the year, including one we just had on human trafficking. We had several guest speakers, including Maj. J. A. Lewis, Sgt. H. Brannon, and Detective J. W. Stahl from the DeKalb County Police Department, Deputy Chief Assistant District Attorney Dalia Racine of the DeKalb County District Attorney’s Office, and Special Agent Nathaniel Whiteman of the FBI’s Atlanta office. These seminars provide great insight into certain topics, and you can also get a good introduction to our center.

Right now, we are holding a winter coat drive, and we’re collecting coats, hats, gloves, and other winter essentials. This drive is benefiting Catholic Charities Atlanta. We plan to do another drive at the beginning of the year as well.

Q: How can students learn more about this center?

A: Feel free to contact myself, Natanya Dowell, directly by phone at 770-425-5103 or by e-mail at Natanya.Dowell@saintleo.edu. You can also visit the Marietta webpage and Facebook page for further information.
