Why choose the Educator Preparation Institute at Saint Leo?
Saint Leo’s Educator Preparation Institute (EPI) provides an alternate route to teacher certification for mid-career professionals and college graduates who were not education majors. Students with a baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited college or university may enter the EPI program, which consists of 5 courses to prepare to take the Florida Teacher Certification Exam (FTCE) in Professional Preparation. Students will need to have obtained passing scores on the General Knowledge and one Subject Area Competence exam before enrolling in the EPI program. (Preparation for the General Knowledge and Subject Area exam are not covered in the EPI programs.)
Students will learn best-practices, effective instructional strategies, and applicable classroom management principles from faculty members who are experienced, educational professionals. To ensure student success, courses place special emphasis on literacy instructional and differentiating instruction to meet student needs.
The EPI is a 15-credit institute that was designed to prepare students for careers in education based upon their specific letter of eligibility from the Florida State Department of Education. This program will enhance the effectiveness of professionals as they transition into K-12 instruction. Field placements are embedded throughout the entire program, so students will need to have a volunteer application and background check completed for the district in which they would like to do their field experiences.
There are 2 possible EPI tracks:
- Graduate: This specialization is best for students who are interested in obtaining their teaching certificate and later might be interested in pursuing an advanced education degree. Depending on the master’s degree chosen some of the courses can be applied to a degree completed within 5 years. All courses are available online.

- Undergraduate: The Undergraduate Track is best for students who want to prepare to obtain their teaching certificate but are not interested in obtaining a master’s degree at a later date.
