    Cheryl Kozina, Ph.D.

    Associate Professor Dr. Cheryl Kozina is an Associate Professor of Biology and a member of the Saint Leo Community since 2013. Prior to coming to Saint Leo, Dr. Kozina completed two postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Pittsburgh in the field of DNA damage and repair. Dr. Kozina̢‰â‰ă˘s prior research in this area has included the study of base excision repair, nucleotide excision repair, double-strand break repair and interstrand crosslink repair and their roles in cancer and aging.Recently Dr. Kozina̢‰â‰ă˘s research has focused on the biology classroom and how to improve molecular biology education. This has included recent presentations at the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Experimental Biology meeting, the Florida Academy of Sciences meeting, and the MAGNA Teaching with Technology conference. Dr. Kozina̢‰â‰ă˘s classrooms are collaborative learning spaces, where students work together on problem sets, modeling and case studies and quizzes are administered using ̢‰âŇPlickers,̢‰âÂĺ where QR-code style pictures are scanned with Dr. Kozina̢‰â‰ă˘s phone rather than using remotes or paper quizzes. Lectures are given in a flipped format outside of the classroom using PowerPoint recording technology to make time for active learning in the classroom.
