Saint Leo Sets October 2 as Date for Social Work Conference

Program features presentations on strengthening families and keynote address on fighting human trafficking.

Saint Leo University will host its sixth annual Social Work Conference on Friday, October 2, on a virtual platform. The theme is “Strengthening Generations of Families and Communities,” with a program from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The conference is open to social work professionals and interested members of the public. Those interested should register by September 15.

The program will feature solution-oriented presentations to social problems that may include family or school violence, trauma, mental illness, and obstacles to successful re-entry to society for individuals coming out of prison.

Alan WilkettAdditionally, the conference will welcome as its guest speaker a law enforcement veteran who has worked for years in the fight against human trafficking. He is Corporal Alan Wilkett of the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office. Wilkett was awarded the 2017 Florida Human Trafficking Law Enforcement Official of the Year and recently received the Law Enforcement Lifetime Achievement Award from the Florida Crime Prevention Association. The second award reflects the extensive work he also has done in crime prevention, and in training community groups and nongovernmental organizations.

Continuing education credits will be processed for a modest fee of $20. Registration for attendees not affiliated with Saint Leo University is $20. Saint Leo University faculty, alumni, students, and staff may attend for free, and share this information with interested parties.

The conference is organized by the undergraduate and graduate social work programs at Saint Leo, which are part of the College of Education and Social Services.
