Medical Humanities, Minor

Why choose a Medical Humanities Minor at Saint Leo?

The Medical Humanities Minor is designed to provide students with an understanding of the field of Medical Humanities, including artistic, social, philosophical, and historical perspectives of medicine and illness. This minor complements related health-related areas of study such as Biology but also Sociology, English, Psychology, Social Work and other disciplines.

The Medical Humanities minor meets the needs of students entering a variety of health-related fields by training those whose jobs place them in direct contact with patients and clients. This could include graduate work or careers in pharmaceutical sales, healthcare administration, counseling, medical technology, non-profit organization, legal or policy-making arenas, community health organizations, as well as many other fields.

Total credit hours in the Medical Humanities Minor (offered only at University Campus) would be 15 (5 x 3-credit Courses) and would consist of the following:

    • MHU 201 – Foundations of Medical Humanities
    • PHI 324 – Bioethics
  • 3 courses from the following (9 credits total):
    • SOC 348 Medical Sociology
    • MHU 339 Selected Topics in Medical Humanities
    • IDS 425 Vincent Van Gogh’s World
    • MHU 315 Medicine and Embodiment
    • SOC 334 Sex and Gender
