On May 13, the Town of St. Leo Town Commission will consider a proposed ordinance to rezone the Abbey Golf Course property for Mohr’s Crossing, a development of up to 628 homes. Saint Leo University strongly opposes this rezoning.

The Town of St. Leo retains full discretion to approve or deny any comprehensive plan amendment or rezoning application based on its consistency with the community’s character, infrastructure capacity, and long-term vision. Your attendance and advocacy at the public hearing can help protect this greenspace, which is an integral part of our shared Benedictine and University heritage.

The Abbey Golf Course is a living landscape that has provided peace, beauty, and balance to this community for generations. Its rolling terrain and mature tree canopy serve as an environmental and spiritual buffer between the Monastery, the Abbey, the University, and surrounding areas. This buffer will become even more critical in the years ahead, as existing zoning already permits significant nearby development and continued population growth.

While Saint Leo University recognizes and supports thoughtful development, we are equally committed to preserving vital open space and the community’s character. A high-density residential project could notably increase population, strain existing infrastructure, and shift the town’s quiet, rural feel.

Please consider attending the public hearing and lending your voice in support of protecting this important space.
