Words of wisdom on keeping balance in life while working on your online degree.

Remember those Southwest Airline commercials a few years back that featured people in awkward and embarrassing moments?

There was one where a rapper on stage in a concert says, "Thank you, Detroit!"

The crowd goes silent, and a fellow band member says, "Detroit was last night."

And then there's the punch line, "Wanna Get Away?"

Embarrassing moments aside, we all long for time away from our frenzied routine of work, family responsibilities, and school. We romanticize about vacations. Plan for them. Save for them. We crave those precious pockets of time when we can focus on family and friends and re-energize our inner beings.

Yet, an annual survey conducted by online travel giant Expedia.com called the "Vacation Deprivation" survey indicates otherwise.

The Truth About Vacation Time

According to the survey, Americans take less than half the vacation time of Europeans. In fact, even though Americans earn a moderate to low amount of vacation days, we still leave an average of 3 days unused each year.

And then when we actually do take time off, do we really disengage? Technology makes it so easy to stay connected to email, the office, or school.

But one day you finally come to understand that work is a rubber ball. If you drop it, it will bounce back. The other four balls are made of glass. If you drop one of these, it will be irrevocably scuffed, nicked, perhaps even shattered.
