    Dr. Valerie Kasper

Assistant Professor in Language Studies and the Arts

Dr. Kasper has been a member of the Saint Leo Community since 2000. She has spent more than 25 years between two academic institutions. For the first ten years, she worked for the College of Medicine at the University of South Florida as part of the editorial office, editing medical manuscripts, creating/maintaining the website, and fulfilling all professional writing needs. The next 18 years have been spent at Saint Leo University, first as an adjunct, and then as full-time faculty in the professional writing specialty. Dr. Kasper teaches composition, literature, journalism, and professional writing classes, both on campus and online. In addition, she advises the campus newspaper, The Lions' Pride.

Her interests lie at the crossroads of African American literature, journalism, and history. She is particularly fond of Hurston and Morrison and their use men in their stories, and how the legacy of slavery and its lingering effects are passed down through these men. Dr. Kasper also has many journalistic interests, and for the past six years, she has been researching African American newspapers, focusing on the first African American newspaper, Freedom's Journal. She's used data mining tools within the digital humanities (geolocation and topic modeling) to research how the first African American newspaper used its rhetorical power to battle the inequalities of the 19th century.
