    Graduate Admissions - Social Work Programs

    Saint Leo University MSW program has a rolling admission process for the program’s three possible start dates. The Master of Social Work program offers residents physically living in the states of Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Jersey, South Carolina, Texas, Tennessee, and Virginia an innovative full-time online program.

    Follow the application process described below for these social work programs:

    • MSW Advanced Standing Clinical Program (Program starts Summer I and Spring 1)
    • MSW Advanced Clinical Practice Program (Program starts Fall I term only)

    MSW Advanced Standing Clinical Program

    All MSW programs have a rolling admission process. In order to find out application deadlines, please reach out directly to an MSW Enrollment Counselor.

    You should use the following process if you are applying to the MSW Advanced Standing Program. The MSW degree is available as a one-year or one and a half year, full-time program for students who have completed a BSW degree from a CSWE-accredited program within the last five years.

    We base our admission decisions on consideration of several criteria, including motivation, maturity, work experience, and leadership qualities that are carefully considered, along with academic records. Each applicant is evaluated individually.

    Admission to Saint Leo University is a simple, straightforward process. In order to become a degree-seeking student in one of our online graduate education programs, you will need to complete the following steps.

    The Master of Social Work program offers residents physically living in the states of Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, New Jersey, South Carolina, Texas, Tennessee, and Virginia an innovative full-time online program.

    Application Process

    To apply for enrollment in Saint Leo University's one-year, full-time or part-time Advanced Standing MSW program:

    1. You must hold a bachelor's degree in social work (BSW) from a CSWE-accredited social work program, complete within the last five years. You must have an undergraduate cumulative or last 60 credit hour GPA of 3.25, attained no grades below a B- in all social work courses, and be in good standing at the last institution attended.
    2. Fill out the online application.
    3. Submit a current resume.
    4. Submit three recommendation letters or forms, you can find and download here the recommendation form. Letters must be from academic or professional sources.
    5. Submit a personal statement of 3-5 double spaced, typed pages addressing the following four questions:
      1. What are your specific professional goals? How would the Saint Leo University Master of Social Work Program, with its emphasis on advanced clinical practice, help you to achieve your goals?
      2. Please describe how you will complete the normal daytime work hours for internships.
      3. What particular personal strengths do you bring to the social work profession? What limitations do you perceive you have? How have both been demonstrated?
      4. What other personal or professional experiences or qualities do you see as aiding you in your goals?
    6. Submit a copy of the senior fieldwork evaluation from your undergraduate social work program. If the evaluation is no longer on file, or you have not entered your internship, submit the social work professional skills form completed by your employer or a BSW social work faculty member who can attest to your generalist practice skills.
    7. Submit official transcripts from each regionally accredited institutions or each approved nationally-accredited institutions you attended or in which you were enrolled, even if you did not complete a full academic term. Graduates or former students of Saint Leo University do not need to submit transcripts if they have been previously submitted and are on file. Transcripts can be sent electronically to grad.admssions@saintleo.edu or mailed to

    8. Complete and submit the cohort verification form.
    9. A criminal background check will be done as required by the field agency you will be placed in. While past convictions do not necessarily preclude admission to the MSW Program, they may affect availability of practicum placements and future employability. If you have ever been convicted of a felony or any crime that involved harm or the threat of harm to another person, please describe the circumstances that led to the court action, the year of conviction, and an explanation of your plans to cope with potential limitations on your practice of social work once you graduate from the MSW program. Students are responsible for updating the MSW Program on any convictions and/or criminal charges after they are admitted to the program. Students with felony convictions might not be eligible for licensure as an LCSW in the State of Florida.
    10. Participate in a personal interview and/or provide additional information as requested by the program's admission committee.

     

    MSW Advanced Clinical Practice

    You should use the following process if you are applying to the MSW with Advanced Clinical Practice Program. This degree is available as either a two-year full-time program or a three-year part-time program.

    2. Fill out the online application.

    7. If applicable, submit GRE or MAT scores. You do not need to submit these scores if you earned a minimum of 3.0 cumulative or last 60 credit hour GPA while obtaining your bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution or approved nationally-accredited institution. But if you did not, you must submit an official Graduate Record Examination (GRE) with a minimum score of 1000 (or its equivalent) or a Miller Analogies Test (MAT) with a minimum score of 410 (or 68th percentile). Test scores more than five years old are usually not accepted. *Please contact an MSW Enrollment Counselor to have your last 60 credit GPA calculated.
    8. Complete and submit the cohort verification form.
