Many businesses and organization leaders say they want to provide professional development opportunities for employees. But often that desire is met with roadblocks. They need to choose the right program for their employees — one that is flexible, affordable, and meaningful.

Recently, the Pasco County (FL) Clerk and Comptroller’s Office turned to Saint Leo University’s Center for Alternative Pathway Programs (CAPP) for its leadership training program for its employees. It was the first time the CAPP Leadership Development Program was available to the office, and Clerk Nikki Alvarez-Sowles sought to offer this to members of her team.

“I wanted to invest in our leaders and our future leaders,” Sowles said.

“This has been something we’ve been wanting to do for a long time, and it is something I know you all have been craving and wanting to do for a very long time,” Sowles said at the pilot program’s graduation ceremony in early January. The clerk and comptroller also expressed her appreciation for Saint Leo’s facilitation of the program.

“When I was here at the launching of the program, I stated that you would learn how to be a leader in both your professional and personal lives,” said Dr. Cindy Lee, director of Saint Leo’s CAPP.

Based on the feedback that we received on the training and also today’s comments, it appears indeed that has occurred.”

In addition to the partnership with Saint Leo University, Florida West Coast Credit Union sponsored the graduation meal and paid for meals for each of the leadership training sessions.
