Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Degree

Why Choose Saint Leo’s Robotics and Artificial Intelligence Degree?

Saint Leo University’s Bachelor of Science in Robotics & Artificial Intelligence degree offers students a full-time degree program at the University Campus. One of the most innovative and rapidly growing areas, the fields of robotics and artificial intelligence are beginning to play an important role in many aspects of modern society, such as automation, manufacturing, the defense industry, commerce—like Amazon—and the healthcare industry to mention a few. Rapid advancements in manufacturing, technology and the opening of new markets around the globe, is creating a surge in the demand for robots and highly skilled robotics engineers, which is expected to grow well into the 21st century.

The B.S. Robotics & Artificial Intelligence degree prepares its graduates for a diverse range of careers in the robotics and automation industry. The curriculum provides depth and breadth in fundamental theory and practical applications to prepare students to design, implement, and evaluate robotics technology to solve real world problems.

This degree program is designed to prepare students for entry-level careers in Robotics and AI. Students learn robotics principles, design and operation, through hands-on project-based experiential learning activities embedded throughout the curriculum. Students will develop a solid conceptual grounding, apply theoretical knowledge in a practical setting, and gain the expertise they will need to target a number of industries, including manufacturing, healthcare, and information technology.

Saint Leo University is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).

Program Features and Differentiators

Five key program features and differentiators of this degree at Saint Leo University include:

  • Diverse and Experience Faculty: Saint Leo boasts small classes and low student-to-faculty ratios, with most classes taught by PhD-level professors whose greatest interest is helping students succeed. Because of our small class sizes, Saint Leo professors can offer students personalized attention and are easily accessible for assistance and advice.
  • Unique Program: The B.S. Robotics & Artificial Intelligence degree is a unique program that combines the disparate but inter-related fields of robotics and artificial intelligence.
  • In-demand Field: According to U.S. Bureau of labor Statistics employment outlook for professionals working in the area of robotics is projected to grow 9 percent over the next five years. The projections for employment are particularly strong in Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina with growth rates that exceed the national averages.
  • Outstanding Resources: Students can hone their skills in three fully equipped computer labs, a Cybersecurity Lab, a Software Engineering Lab, a state-of-the-art Robotics & AI Lab, and classrooms equipped with state-of-the-art SMART Board technology.
  • Experiential Learning Opportunities: Internship opportunities with local and state government agencies, active student organizations such as Citibank, Cisco, Verizon, Tech-Data, ReliaQuest, Disney, and many other local organizations.

Learning Outcomes

Robotics is a discipline that combines computer hardware, electrical, mechanical, sensing, and computer science in real time. The curriculum includes foundational courses in embedded system design, electronics system design, fundamentals of mechanical systems, robotics system design, applications of artificial intelligence in intelligent robotics, Machine Learning and Intelligent Systems. The first two years will cover the fundamentals of the broader subject area (Computer Science) by encompassing topics in computer programming, modelling, software engineering, databases, robot systems design, and computer hardware. The third and fourth year will cover topics such as robot controllers, artificial intelligence, project management, and will culminate with a significant capstone project. The curriculum for the degree program will require students to complete 120 credit hours of course work.

Students receiving a B.S. degree in Robotics & Artificial Intelligence should be able to:

  • Identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics.
  • Apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare.
  • Evaluate and integrate the mechanical, electrical, and computational components of a cyber-physical robotics system.

Professional Development Opportunities

Several key professional development opportunities include:

  • Internships: Our students have interned with Citibank, Cisco, ReliaQuest, Verizon, Tech-Data Corporation, Pasco County Sheriff’s Department, and many other local organizations and departments at Saint Leo.
  • Technology: Students can hone their technical skills in three fully equipped computer labs, a Cybersecurity Lab, a Software Engineering Lab, a state-of-the-art Robotics & AI Lab.
  • Co-curricular activities: Students can participate in a variety of activities organized by the student-run Computer Club and eSports Club.
  • Capture-the-Flag Cyber Hackathons: Students can compete for prizes in the annual Capture-the-Flag cyber hackathon events that test their mastery of programming and cybersecurity skills.
  • Memberships: Outstanding students may be selected for induction into Saint Leo’s Omicron Chapter of Upsilon Pi Epsilon, the international honor society for distinguished scholars in the computing and information systems disciplines.
