Episode 66: Mary Kate Soliva, U.S. Army vet/Reservist and Doctor of Criminal Justice student

The Doctor of Criminal Justice degree program offered by Saint Leo University is one of the most unique such doctoral programs in the United States. While there are Ph.D. programs with a concentration in criminal justice, very few match the options students have to customize their degree program as they work toward pursuing a higher-level role in the field or going into education.

One current student in this Doctor of Criminal Justice program is Mary Kate Soliva, a U.S. Army veteran and member of the Army Reserves. During this episode of the Saint Leo 360 podcast, Soliva discussed:

  • Her military career serving in the U.S. Army and why she decided to depart as a full-time Army soldier for a civilian career but wanted to continue to serve in the Army Reserves
  • The challenges for veterans, especially women, when it comes to transitioning from military service to civilian life and finding their purpose after service
  • Organizations she has discovered that support military veterans with their transition and help with post-military career services
  • Why she chose to pursue Saint Leo University’s Doctor of Criminal Justice (DCJ) program and some other unique academic and leadership opportunities she is pursuing
  • Her role as president of the Student Veterans of America (SVA) chapter at Saint Leo University and the numerous benefits of membership for student-veterans to this organization
  • How the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the military and veterans
  • Her current professional roles and future career goals
